Garden Honors Mattesons, Donors

Serendipity has a way of making good ideas even better. Such is the case for the new honor garden located in the middle of the Matteson Family Health-Science Complex.

“We wrestled for months with the best way to honor the Mattesons for their $3.5 million gift,” says President Ash. “Then one day while watching progress of the Hall of Sciences, the solution appeared.”

The centerpiece of the honor garden pays homage to the Mattesons’ marine heritage while acknowledging the science focus of the complex. The 12 ft tall installation includes an anchor chain enveloped in a DNA-style helix. The surrounding courtyard features engraved brick pavers, hard surface seating and plantings— all highlighted by dramatic lighting.

“Paving the Way” is the name of SCC’s engraved brick paver program. Donors can select from six sizes, with prices ranging from $250 to $2,500 for placement in the honor garden on the West Burlington campus or in the center courtyard on the Keokuk campus.
